There is a fair amount of jargon used in education and legislative circles. Part of getting involved requires learning to understand and talk the same language. This key will demystify common abbreviations and terms. Where appropriate, links to organizations, committees, and resources are included.
CCSS = Common Core State Standards, sometime abbreviated as CC, also called College and Career Readiness Standards
HEAC = Home Education Advisory Council
HEC = House Education Committee, usually meets in LOB room 207
SEC = Senate Education Committee, usually meets in LOB room 103
HB = a bill that originates in the NH House of Representatives
SB = a bill that originates in the NH Senate
FN = denotes that a bill has a fiscal note, follows the bill number
/A = denotes that a bill has an amendment, follows the bill number
LSR = Legislative Services Request, the filing made by a legislator for a proposed bill
OTP = Ought to Pass recommendation by a legislative committee, indicates that the committee supports the bill
ITL = Inexpedient to Legislate recommendation by a legislative committee, indicates that the committee is against the bill
COC = Committee of Conference, the process to reconcile bills that have different versions passed by the House and Senate
LOB = Legislative Office Building, the building immediately behind the Statehouse, located at 33 N State St, Concord, NH 03301
SAU = School Administrative Unit, refers to the local school district office of a community
PA = Participating Agency, the homeschool family’s reporting school, may be the local SAU or a private school that offers the service
