There are a variety of reasons why a family may pursue developmental testing or counseling services. This can be helpful if the child enrolls in classes at schools or private organizations for advanced academic or enrichment programs. Sometimes parents suspect a learning disability and formal testing can qualify the child for an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 plan which then may be used for accommodations for other formal tests such as the SAT or ACT. Many institutions require re-testing every three to five years.

Refer to our page Children with Special Needs for information re testing available through public schools, and additional support organizations and groups.

Gifted and talented children also may benefit from counseling services that are accustom to dealing with their unique socio-emotional needs. Although specifically written for IQ testing, Hoagie's Gifted page has several helpful suggestions regarding how to find the right counselor for your child's needs. We have more information and resources for G/T students on this page.
